Why does nanoscience research matter?

Nanotechnology - hailed as the first technogical revolution of the 21st Century - supports economic growth whilst helping to solve some of society's greatest challenges.

At the nanometer scale (a billionth of a meter), materials have remarkably different properties than those expected by observing everyday life. The new science at this scale can be exploited to provide novel ways of tackling the societal issues, from addressing climate change to improving human health.

The transformation that nanotechnology could make to society is comparable to the impact that information technology has had over the last 20years. Applications of nanotechnology are only just beginning to make an impact on the market. The real impact of the technology will not be felt for five to ten years when it is predicted to be worth many billions of pounds, however this relies on continued support for the basic research and development.

Nanotechnology is one of the few subject areas that cross boundaries over physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and engineering. Bringing research expertise together enhances the potential for nanotechnology to impact on many areas of society:

  • Computing and Electronics
  • Construction
  • Cosmetics
  • Energy
  • The Environment
  • Food and Drink
  • Healthcare
  • Packaging
  • Sports and Leisure
  • Textiles and Clothing
  • Transport
