Research Councils UK Nanoscience Programme
The Research Councils UK Nanoscience Programme provides the focus needed to evolve nanotechnology. This coordination of research ensures that the UK remains a world leader in the area.
Nanoscience is the science of the very small (a billionth of a metre). Nanotechnology controls the shape and size of materials to utilise the unique properties at this scale.
In 2007 the Research Councils UK Nanoscience Programme was formed, incorporating the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Since then it has grown into a World Class multidisciplinary programme. By harnessing this rapidly maturing field, the Nanoscience Programme has promoted responsible innovation that has led to exciting developments that promise a positive impact in the areas of energy, healthcare and the environment.
The success of the programme is due to a combination of factors:
- Supporting excellence in research
- Providing the skills needed to develop the field to its full potential through Centres of Doctoral Training
- The appointment of a strategic advisor – Professor Peter Dobson of the University of Oxford
- Providing facilities by introducing shared use of current equipment
- Contributing to the government's agenda addressing issues surrounding nanotechnology
- Promoting responsible development, addressing issues that may affect people or the environment at the early stage of research
- Providing coordination of research through RCUK leadership
